ECMWF
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 Member and Co-operating States, mostly in Europe. It has its headquarters in the UK, and two other duty stations in Germany and Italy. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing global numerical weather predictions at medium and long ranges for its Member and Co-operating States and the broader community. It holds one of the largest archives of numerical weather prediction data in the world.
ECMWF is a key player in Copernicus, the Earth Observation component of the European Union’s Space programme, offering users worldwide quality-assured information on climate change through the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), atmospheric composition through the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), and flooding and fire danger through the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS). This collaboration is evolving to include further work towards the EU’s Green Deal, with the second phase of Copernicus (including new work on the monitoring and verification of carbon dioxide emissions in support of the global stocktake), and the development of prototype digital twins of the Earth as part of the EU’s Destination Earth initiative.
