The EXPECT – Towards an Integrated Capability to Explain and Predict Regional Climate Changes project aims to develop an advanced operational capability to integrate climate attribution and prediction at the regional level, with support from Horizon Europe, the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF), and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee.
Kick-off meeting
From 14 to 16 May 2024, EXPECT partners gathered in Barcelona for an engaging and productive kick-off meeting, marking the official start of the project and setting the stage for the collaborative efforts that will unfold over the next four years.
This Horizon Europe project unites 14 consortium partners, including the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), ARCTIK – Communication for Sustainability, CINECA Consorzio Interuniversitario (CINECA), DKZR, ECMWF, Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), Met Office (MO), The University of Reading (UREAD), Universität Hamburg (UHAM), Universität Leipzig (ULEIP), Universitat Heidelberg, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VUA), and The University of Toronto (UTO).
By harnessing cutting-edge data and technologies, EXPECT will offer reliable assessments and forecasts of regional climate shifts on inter-annual to multi-decadal scales. EXPECT will also tackle critical knowledge gaps, designing robust infrastructure to manage vast Earth observation and climate simulation data. This innovative approach will provide actionable insights, empowering communities and decision-makers to respond to climate impacts with greater accuracy and foresight.
